June 1999 NEGEF Grantees

Three and one half years and nine rounds of grantmaking behind us, we are pleased to report that NEGEF has received over 477 proposals, has funded 216, and is reaching a very wide spectrum of environmental activists. The average grant is just over $1,850 and most groups are volunteer driven. Listed below are the groups who received support during our most recent grant round.

Bicycle Coalition of Maine

To provide valet bicycle parking at three fairs or other special, large public events in Maine to reduce traffic congestion, cut pollution, and raise consciousness of bicycling as a viable transportation option.

To help the Chelsea Green Space Committee to conduct an education and outreach campaign about the hazards of environmental justice issues to Chelsea residents who have not always had a voice in policies that affect their lives.

To support the 1999 Northeast Action Camp II, a week of activist training to give citizens the knowledge and tools to confront issues related to nuclear generation, waste disposal and decommissioning of the region's aging nuclear power plants.

To provide support for the group's campaign against urban sprawl. Citizens for Stratham are presenting information about the impacts of scatter development and mobilizing citizens to participate in local planning and zoning issues promoting wise growth in their community.
