Simple Things You Can Do In Your Yard
And from Salem Sound 2000, one of our grantees, some spring suggestions about "Simple Things You Can Do in Your Yard."
- Mow your lawn high (2" first cut of the season and 3" after that) for a well-rooted, stress tolerant turf that resists pests naturally.
- Mow when weed flowerheads first appear instead of using herbicides.
- Water in the early morning to minimize evaporation and reduce disease.
- Replace chemical fertilizers with organic options (e.g. fish meal, seed meal, or compost).
- Compose your yard waste - it makes a great source of nutrients for soil.
And you can go a step further:
- Replace your lawn with a low-maintenance landscape.
- Plant native species in your yard.
